Online Video: So Who's Winning?

Posted Aug 04, 2008 08:16am EDT by Henry Blodget in Internet, Media, Products and Trends

When Disney reported earnings recently, the media company said its business was actually helped by its online video assets. Shocking! But according to my SAI colleague Michael Learmonth, Disney is a rarity. One stumbling block has been advertising models on the Web, where tolerance for ads is much lower compared with TV. Meanwhile, as the space continues to consolidate in the shadow of YouTube, the clock is ticking as patience wanes for clicks to translate into profits.

this is big news for many reasons. one of them is related to wenda millard's "pork bellies" statement, if we can call it: the reason brand media's inventories are being sold as "pork bellies" is because of their wide distribution strategy. brand media has been persuaded to distribute their content to sites would not have survived otherwise or flourished without high quality content, be it in print or in video. so disney's walled garden approach may prevent its inventories being sold as "pork bellies" and in turn has the ability to charge advertisers premium CPM.

I love the idea of online tv. I wish I could cut off the satelite dish and get it all from the internet to my tv. Maybe even get a box for my tv that would serve as internet input and hard drive like Tivo. So I could use my tv more like a computer but with greater ease. I am all for it... Which brings me to my next point... WHOEVER???... IS ABLE TO BRING HOME COMPUTING AND TELEVISION AND MUSIC AND PHONE INTO ONE EASY TO SYSTEM WILL HAVE IT MADE!!! That is the fortune that everyone is looking for. BECAUSE there are so many people out there who would love to use a computer and do all this at once; BUT C-AIN'T because they are so computer illiterate. The door is there for anyone willing to break it open...
