Craig Newmark's Moral Compass

Posted Mar 06, 2008 03:28pm EST by Sarah Lacy in Internet, Media, Newsmakers, Venture Capital, M and A, IPOs
Craig Newmark isn't the CEO of a huge public company. He's not a VC power broker. He's no linchpin of San Francisco society. But he's one of the most beloved figures on the Net. The witty and self-effacing Newmark is, of course, the Craig in Craigslist. Craigslist is the twenty-third largest site in the U.S., according to HitWise and just keeps growing. Meanwhile it charges less than 1% of those users any fees and has zero advertising. It may be one of the most un-ambitious companies in the Valley -- even if it's one of the most successful.

What a great guy he is. Craig seems like a guy who truly knows contentment and happiness. Thanks for a great site.

This person has made the greatest impact on allowing the "little guy" the affordability to sell that $50 item for a fair price without having to prepay by credit card. The local newspaper in the bay area's policy's were very difficult and unaffordable. I give things away rather than sell them because of Craigslist. I ask people for things that they no longer need, but don't spend the time posting. I offer a fair price. The site is getting better and better to use. My favorite past time while waiting for a doctor's appointment is surfing Craigslist on the Apple iphone.

What a great human being. Too bad we can't clone him for a universal CEO. Just think how much better the world would be!

Wow! He kept our hippy value system to this day, through it all. Bravo, Craig! That was uplifting.

My friend and I built a free tool for everyone in the world to learn vocabulary, it's called myvobu.com. We spent 5 months developing it and decided at the last minute to make it free for the greater good of mankind. Similar sites charge students $60 or more for what we offer for free.
