Is Ashton Kutcher the Entrepreneur Legit?

Posted Sep 10, 2008 12:35pm EDT by Sarah Lacy in Internet, Media, Venture Capital, M and A, IPOs
Valley types can get starstruck like anyone else, but when a big-name actor comes into our realm, we can turn nasty. After all, what do pretty-boy actors know about building a multi-billion dollar tech company? So, when actor Ashton Kutcher opened up the TechCrunch50 conference to debut his new startup Blah Girls, the audience wondered if he was really launching a startup or just lending his name to a vanity project. We sat down with Kutcher at the conference to get a better sense of his vision and exactly what he does at the company. (Once I could get his name right.)

Ashton Kutcher is actually quite a smart guy. I just don't understand why he decided not to have his own children by marrying a woman (Demi Moore) who already has her own children and who doesn't want to have anymore. A young guy like Ashton should also have his own children to look after.

I always enjoy Sarah Lacy. She knows technology and Silicon Valley inside out, and she is a superb interviewer. Her charming personality and good looks helps too.

Not sure about the business model, however Kutcher is a smart guy. Celebs get behind a lot of stuff and work hard at them, but most don't succeed (i.e. restaurants). So time will tell whether the revenues will exceed the expenses and whether it will become a "must-see" site or not. All he needs is about 10,000 new users a month, or 100,000 page views and he can then license a link to it to People magazine and other celebrity rags.

He's not an Entrepreneur Legit unless his "start-up" makes money. Even if he gets a million page views I wouldn't consider him an entrepreneur unless it becoms a real business (that means customers, not eyeballs). It is definitely has some artistic merit, but as for a business...I don't think so.

Sarah, Sarah you're blushing and gushing at the same time. I'm guessing you didn't spend much time around boys in college? She's the silly one here. He's just promoting his crap. What happened to "If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be"? BTW, that comment above about how great she is sounds very autobiographical. Sarah, you left out that you're hot.

Launching Blah Girls at TC50 doesn't make sense to me. Arrington just used Kutcher to get more people to the conference. As far as Sarah, she's cute and doesn't take herself too seriously.

What people don't know is how smart this guy is. A person above said "Celebs get behind a lot of stuff and work hard at them, but most don't succeed (i.e. restaurants). " Guess what. . . Ashton has 3 successful restaurants that have been open for over 5 years. He produces a ton of TV, he produces a lot of movies, and he's going to be just as successful in the internet world. Don't be a hater just because he's rich and you're not. He works HARD for his money.
