Open Source Names to Watch

Posted Mar 25, 2008 06:09pm EDT by Sarah Lacy in Internet, Software and Services, Venture Capital, M and A, IPOs
Whether you're bearish on the current crop of open source companies like I am or bullish like Mule Source CEO Dave Rosenberg, you have to admit the movement has fundamentally changed software. In most cases, it's a change for the better. The software is almost always cheaper with fewer bugs and encourages collaboration among coders everywhere. Beyond just corporate servers, open source pervades the Net and the world around us, running in everything from TiVo to cell phones to cars. Here, Rosenberg and I discuss who still looks good among open source startups, now that high profile names like Jboss and MySQL have been acquired, and what big companies have profited the trend the most.

This guy is the most credible CEO I've seen in a long time. Mulesource will continue to be leader in the space.

I went to B-school with Dave and agree completely. No one knows this space better.

I don't really agree that Novell is the most disappointing in this space. Sure they should have a bigger market share than they do, but really they've kicked things into high gear since Messman was ousted as CEO.

Novell is helping the Open Source movement more than any other company. They are focused on making Open Source software work with proprietary software which is driving the adoption of OS software in the enterprise. Their partnership with Microsoft is a huge benefit to customers and is enabling Open Source to enter into companies where before, it would not be even considered.

See what happens Dave when youre not a good lucking dude? You dont get flirted with. Btw, THIS is how the 'Zuck' interview should have been done instead of the Oprah garbage we got at SXSW, I wanted to see for myself how Ms Lacy does her interviews and she's not one of the myriads of pretty faces that tech organizations foist on us. Maybe you should stick to journalism like this clip shows you can do.
