Saturday, July 4, 2009, 2:40PM ET - U.S. Markets Closed.
Times are tough all over, but they're really bad in Michigan, where unemployment is pushing 9% and foreclosures are among the highest in the country.
Michigan is suffering not just because of the automakers' struggles but also because of bad policy decisions by the state's politicians, says Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.).
"First and foremost they raised people's taxes - they cared more about the state budget than about people's family budgets." McCotter says. "When you suck the life blood of people's hard-earned savings, you tend to drive the economy down further than it already was."
McCotter's concern is that Michigan's plight could be a harbinger for the nation if Barack Obama is elected president and raises taxes on those making over $250,000, as planned.
"We've seen in Michigan -- you start off taxing people who are disliked, that has a negative affect on the economy and then you come back and tax everyone else because their first concern is the government's coffers," Rep. McCotter says. "The worst thing you can do in time of economic recession is start raising taxes and further drive economy down into a potential depression."
Before raising taxes, McCotter suggests Obama (or whoever's in charge) trying the following first:
You'd expect such rhetoric from a fiscal conservative who is supporting John McCain's candidacy. But McCotter is also critical of the Bush administration for concentrating too much power at the Federal level and for what he calls bipartisan policy failures on many issues, notably trade with "communist, totalitarian nations."
Rep. McCotter has also been an outspoken opponent of the bailout bill, as discussed in part one of my interview.
How true it is. Hold on to your hat people if Obama gets into the oval office. He has already stated that he will take from the middle class and give to the welfare masses and undocumented (also known as NOT LEGAL) aliens just as his mentors Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi want to do.. If you vote for him you will have no right to complain once your wallet is opened for him and his cronies.
yeah...what we need is another two wars...and tax cuts for the super rich...that sure made the world a better place...NOT!
Increasing taxes in Michigan during the auto industry crash would be the same as hiking corporate taxes during a recession, which Obama plans to do. Simple fact, it will hurt us all.
News flash - we're $50 trillion in the hole thanks to the Repubs. Who do you THINK is going to pay that bill?
If you look at what Bush admin actually has DONE, and not at the label like "Republican", you will see that this administration is a Communist, Socialist, Statist, and anything else but Republican. But Mr. McCotter is wasting his breath. He sure knows that Obama is not going to do anything what he suggests. Obama will be a wonderful successor to Bush, seamless transition. God save us.
Who creates jobs? Corporations and rich people. Every dollar taken from them means fewer and fewer jobs created. It's that simple. But socialist Obambi DOES NOT GET IT.
Spreading the wealth is achievable through private charities! I am perfectly capable of determining where the fruits of my hard labor is shared. I do NOT trust the government to distribute it to those who actually need help or deserve it. Government is grossly inefficient! Please do not assume that those of us who have been responsible, paid our bills, worked overtime, and invested for our own future just want to be greedy with our earnings. I do share--at a larger rate than Biden actually--without the government telling me to do so. Before anyone chimes in about Bush...Bush has been awful and many fiscal conservatives share this view.
Response to "Spreading the wealth" takes money from people and companies who create the jobs. Not only does it cause a contraction in the labor force, it creates a welfare state and more dependence on wasteful government programs (which we taxpayers pay for).
My heart sure hurts for anyone making over $250,000 per year
the point of america isnt for the gvt to spread the wealth around to everyone. it is to work for your own wealth. that is why this nation is messed up. taxes and giveaways are too high and too many. if the gvt lowers taxes expect their revenues to go up not down after a year. its like they never took a single economics class.
This is right-wing garbage. Obama's simply talking about moving the tax rates for the $250K+ earners back to where they were under Clinton. (And the economy seemed to do just fine back then.) Most working people would get a small tax cut. In a recession the government needs to keep spending on things like infrastructure; hell, even Bernanke agrees. To do this, though, we need to reduce WASTEFUL spending AND increase tax revenues. We're all Keynesians now. Really, Task, I had a higher opinion of you. You should know better than to recirculate Repub talking points.
How will we suffer? I will try to explain this and keep it short & simple. People work and make money, they spend money, the natural order of commerce works just fine. If you tax people they don't have the money. If you just hand out money or "spread the wealth" then whats the incentive to work or work harder. Research and try to find any government project that didn't include waste, fraud, or abuse. There isn't one. Its just that simple. Truly free markets work, anytime you mess with them you get the mess we are in. Also the fact that our money is backed by nothing and the inflation of the dollar is destroying the middle class of America doesn't really help. So stop looking for a handout and go get a job. Be productive.
Obama's spreading of wealth around is inconsequential to the impeding inflationary increase due to the bailout of those banks which are the largest speculators in the derivatives markets. Goldman sachs and JP Morgan sold these derivatives which are now the reason for the so called credit crisis. So your purchasing power will be greatly diminished to subsidize the wheelings and dealings of derivatives speculators on Wall St. Any transfer of wealth by Obama is a drop in the bucket in comparison.
This is the truth about Obama. Higher taxes, more spending, doubled interest rates on all loans, inflation, unemployment. "Change"...oh please...change back to Jimmy Carter limp-wristed socialism disguised as compassion and leadership. People want Obama for change like they want to buy a new car or dump their spouse to improve their life; brilliant. It's feel good about myself change for the sake of change without changing yourself. It's the road to Hell people, figure it out. The politicians on both sides are selling us out to get elected. Do you want to give your money to a politician or decide how to spend your own money? Less government, more freedom.
Having been unemployed in Michigan for the past 2 1/2 years I would say to the rest of you out there: I have some great recipies for "road kill squirrel".
You can't legislate hard work and being competitive. That is why Michigan failed. We've become a society of victims and it's always somebody elses fault when things don't go right. The more victims we create, the more entitlement philosphy we breed and we become Europe. And, if I own a successful business and I don't like the tax situation I'm in, I move facilities and eventually HQ to a place that is more corporation friendly. And there will be nothing Mr. Obama can do at that point.
When the folks over $250,000 pay higher taxes, they clamp down on the flow of cash going out. Everyone sells less and the direct effect is that you'll be out of a job. Spreading the wealth still sound good to you?
When he taxes the businesses and job providers over $250k, it doesn`t take a Harvard Law degree to know that the tax will passed back down to the consumer. This will include the poorest to the richest. You will end up paying far more of your income for the tax relief than you will ever receive in the tax rebate. Common sense says that if taxes are cut that will stimulate the economy by having more cash available to invest in business and create more jobs for everyone.
The weakness in his argument is that he fails to mention that taxation is IMMORAL and UNCONSTITUTIONAL. The only solution is to ABOLISH all taxes. That's the ONLY way to regain LIBERTY and attain prosperity.

How would we suffer if Obama "spreads the wealth" around
