Silicon Valley Hotshot Turns Prius Into High-Tech Batmobile

Posted Jun 26, 2009 03:11pm EDT by Sarah Lacy in Venture Capital, M and A, IPOs, Tales of the Valley, Clean Tech

Say you're a successful entrepreneur and venture capitalist who wants a one-of-a-kind, show-stopping electric car. What do you do? If you're the very playful Satish Darmaraj, you build your own!

After selling his most recent company, Zimbra, to Yahoo for a cool $350 million, Darmaraj decided to splurge on something electric. He thought about a Tesla, but at the end of the day decided he loved his Toyota Prius too much to switch. And while plenty of people pay a few thousand dollars to turn their hybrid Priuses into electrics, Darmaraj took, well, a very Silicon Valley route instead.

A true tech geek, Darmaraj sought out George Barris, the creator of the original Batmobile and updated versions of the Knight Rider car, and convinced him to come out of retirement to make Darmaraj’s Prius something greener, cooler and of course more high-tech. The result is a one-of-a-kind car that wound up costing Darmaraj more than a Tesla Roadster, but boasts sunny colors and sporty lines, an all-carbon-fiber redone interior, and in-car wifi network. All this and it still gets a 105 miles per gallon.

This is the latest in our series on Valley luminaries who are investing in remaking the U.S. auto industry and breaking America's dependence on foreign oil:

As their ventures make clear, everyone has a slightly different vision of exactly what that future should look like.

But here's Satish Darmaraj's vision of fun, starting right here today. Enjoy!

I don't understand. How can somebody sell such an application for 350 million?????????? It seems so obsolete already. Can somebody explain this. It's a serious queston. I just don't get it.............

If detroit doesn't change it's strategy, the Silicon Valley could be the next Detroit, which means more jobs for the IT techies.

That's no batmobile. It's a Prius with an ugly paint job and cheap aftermarket upholstery.

@Pieter.. I totally agree with you. It was a slow slow application and $350 million is crazy! Either the guys at Yahoo are fools or the guys at Zimbra had great salesmanship.

I’m really jealous he got the designer of the original Batmobile to help him. I tried to get the designer from the James Bond movies to help me fix up my Aston Martin, but he just blew me off.

Hey folks! Let's face it! The electric car requires power generated mostly by coal powered gereration. If the liberal progressives succeed on the Cap & Trade bill, the cost of electrical power will rise dramatically along with the cost of driving your electrical vehecle. Call your representives and help stop the pitch for Cap and trade. It's an economically bad bill!

I think this man would have saved some money if he would have bought a chevy volt and it looks a way lot better than the prius.

Pieter, when those kinds of buy/sell activities go on there is usually a lot more 'behind the scenes' than we are aware. Could be a sweetheart deal, or a way to seed R&D off the balance sheet - plenty of things.

This is Awesome! I wish more celebrities and auto tuners (like Al & Eds) and the car magazines would do more tricked out Priuses. This awesome.

Dude....If you paid more than a Tesla to soup up your Prius, you TOTALLY got hosed. A TESLA is a TESLA and a Prius is well.... A Prius. That is yet another example of somebody with more money than brains. It is amazing how these dorks are able to start mediocre, obscure companies and then sell them for millions. Probably to other dorks with more money than brains. And dude, whoopty-dupedy about having internet access in your car. Anybody that buys even a $500 (or less) laptop with a wireless card can have internet access in their car. For that matter they can even have internet access on their bicycle or even as they just walk around town. Add a relatively inexpensive satellite phone/data connection and you can have internet access from practically anywhere in the world.

Couldn't he find an uglier car, at least the paint job! It looks like a honey lemon pill. I can built something better with half the money. LOL

Strange car.... you noticed he wouldn't give the final price tag. Somewhat emabarassing I'm sure, but certainly not as much as Yahoo should be for buying Zimbra for $350M!

This country is a long way from being off oil. We need to be drilling here and using our natural resources. They were put on the earth for a reason to use. I myself will never own a electric car unless nothing else available. And this stupid cap and trade crap will drive the cost of electric up and it take coal to make electricity. Tree huggers have not a clue just complain about everything but go home and turn their lights on.
