Windows 7 And Twitter-Bing: Microsoft Again King For A Day

Posted Oct 22, 2009 01:00pm EDT by Henry Blodget in Investing, Internet, Software and Services

The last few years for Microsoft have been tantamount to abject humiliation.

Windows Vista bombed, once-declared-dead Apple roared back to steal computer-and-mind-share, Windows Mobile disappeared, and a decade of futility on the Internet continued.

But now, for a day, Microsoft is king again.

Windows 7, an operating system that even Redmond skeptics describe as "great", launches with enormous fanfare.  So eager are customers to get their hands on the thing that it's already the best pre-order selling product on Amazon.

And then there was yesterday's Twitter-Bing integration.  Not only was Microsoft the first major search engine to take this obvious and important step, the announcement forced an embarrassingly lame response from search giant Google: A blog post promising that, someday, it would offer Twitter integration, too.

Will Bing's Twitter integration allow Bing to gain real share again Google?

Unlikely.

But this and Windows 7 demonstrate that, at least for a day, Microsoft's competitive mojo is finally back again.

After working with Windows 7, I must admit that Ray Ozzie and team have a real winner. The new features are great

Windows and Microsoft in general have a bad reputation. The public is bitter for being forced to buy new software and hardware for so many years because of Gates monopolies. Windows 7 is supposed to be Vista without the bugs. I like Vista, but it did have a lot of bugs.

Buy Gold/Silver/Platinum as the metals are BUG FREE and will have value when they decide to launch Windows 8.

This changes the landscape on the search. Although Goog probably don't care right now, what's the implication of search on Twitter and Facebook?

Microsoft has always, and always will, produce low quality software: Dirty-Operating-System, all buggy incarnations of Windows, sluggish Pocket PC, overheating X-Box, leap-year-bricked Zune, .... When will people learn? How many patches before giving up on an OS?!? Pay for Mac or save money and get Ubuntu.....

I've pre-ordered Win 7 to upgrade my Vista laptop. Yes it costs $$ compared to FREE Linux but they don't compare. I've installed Ubuntu/Knoppix/SimplyMemphis/Vector/Elive and they are not any faster than Vista at boot-time on my 2 yr old Acer 2GB Laptop. In my opinion, the Win7 is 3 times more slick and easyb to use than the Linux products I've tried. Get Windows 7. And Linux is still free for a reason, you get what you pay for.

Henry: The BIG thing about Windows 7 is not a set of "features". Its perforamance of a particular kind: Battery life. Windows 7 is much less power consuming, and that is a big issue for individuals, Once you see it (hmm: nice!) and hear how much longer it keeps your PC alive on batteries - you'll want it.

Windows 7 HAS to be great. I have no doubt Microsoft has done a very good job here. The installation my be a pain in the back pocket but I think a lot of folks have been waiting to just buy new PC's with W7 installed. I'm a BIG Mac guy but good luck to Microsoft too. I think Apple will continue to inch up in ranks as well.

San - only idiots think that everyone else who doesnt have the same mindset is an idiot. Open source office is not even close to MS office in terms of capabilities. And by your definition, only a small % of OS users are not idiots! People out here just need an excuse to complain against MS - no matter how good of a job they do. Look at xbox 360, Zune HD, Win 7 and Big
