Tuesday, December 22, 2009, 2:38AM ET - U.S. Markets open in 6 hours and 52 minutes.
What's interesting is how much of that scramble occurred before Lehman Brothers' mid-September bankruptcy vs. after, when the world was fixated on systemic risk.
Recalling the market's sharp rally in the spring of 2008 after the Fed engineered JPMorgan's takeover of Bear Stearns, "we all thought the world was going to be a better, safer place," Sorkin says. "But throughout that period, behind the scenes, the government was involved in all sort of intervention efforts. They saw the train coming down the track, and everybody sorta tried to get out of the way but obviously don't get out of the way on time."
While much of the focus was on saving Lehman Brothers, Sorkin also reports on the following:
"Almost everyone who's still in office or power thinks of themselves today as a survivor," Sorkin says. "I'm not sure they appreciate that they're only survivors to the extent we the American public helped bail them out and what the responsibility they now have is to the community."
So we asked Sorkin if any of the CEOs who attended his book launch party in NYC this week have expressed a sense of humility, or just learned any lessons from their collective near-death experience.
You'll have to watch the accompanying video to get the details, but you can probably guess the answer.
WALL STREET IS A BALOON FULL OF CRAP & HOT AIR. I CALL IT ROBIN HOOD . THEY JUST DON,T GIVE TO THE POOR
Does a parasite care about it's host? Neither do the banks give a shit about the American people.
Wall street is ready to crack the bottle of champagne open to celebrate victory. Again, they remain oblivious to the fact that the financial market may collapse and that it may be too soon to celebrate victory. Most financial institutions are making profit because they are taking advantage of the volatility on different markets. I wish that it could be proven without any doubts that the worst is behind us, but as we all know anything can happen. I doubt that bail out money will be made available to banks again and that if things go bad their current greed will be like the last straw to brake the camel's back.
Don't worry when revolution comes this a**hole will have his very own tree with a noose along with all of the banksters IMO.
Government should never have got into bed with Wall Street screwing their investors is the only thing they are good at.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khGZ3a4zTNU Goldman sachs orchestrated this and now their old competitors are gone..LEH BS MER
Yet another day, and more bad news about the true state of our country. If only the end everybody talks about could just get here, and we could move on. Its kind of like being stuck in a large mound of crap- just spinning your wheel and slinging the crap all over the place. The smell of greed, yuck!!
2013 is where this bubble bursts! Can't you see it?
compliments of Bloomberg.com in their article about who's face to put on a new $1 million dollar bill, given the steady decline of the dollar: "-- Henry Paulson: How could the nation not put a former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. chairman on its currency, especially since the U.S. government is essentially a subsidiary of the investment bank." Amen, brother. When will the American Public wake up and realize that Goldman Sachs is the Master Puppeteer and the Federal Government the Puppet.
Dirt-dwellers. I am prepared. I went out last night and got my cheese and await the deluge. Consider this small point: $14 Trillion was lost in the market ... how many of your retirement plans were altered because of that? You make $1, they make $1 million. You're happy. They're happy. Everyone is happy. The Obama throws you guys a bone and you roll around in the dirt and ask for more? Heck, The Obama even has you convinced that we are in a jobless recovery!!! The Obama has you believing that America can succeed with 18% unemployment! The Obama has you believing the Wall Street bankers are under control! Look who is showing huge profits, dirt-dwellers!!! Wall Street bankers that got your tax dollars. The Obama tells you to be happy because he is working tirelessly to find a way to create jobs. He has your unemployment benefits extended. You get $377/week and exec pay is capped at $500,000.... PLUS, Wall Street gets taxpayer money!!! The dirt-dwells roll in the dirt and beg for more! Some Senators get VIP loans while the heart of America, the small business man gets shit. But, The Obama is now going to help the small business owner. I know, dirt dwellers, at least he is doing something .... The Obama has also said he is working tirelessly to create jobs.... and, MORE people getting laid off? The dirt-dwellers roll in the dirt and ask for more. Profits are being made because corp got rid of people and/or moved out of the USA. They made zero profits on sales revenue, but on Americans losing their jobs. The market shoots to the sky!! The dirt-dwellers roll in the dirt and ask for more. The dirt-dwellers give their money to GM and Chrysler and The Obama rewrites bankruptcy laws to save them!!! GM and Chrysler lost big in the Clunker program AND are continuously losing market share!!! GM is building a factory in China to export cars to the USA! The dirt-dwellers roll in the dirt and ask for more. Oil is over $80 a barrel with 18% unemployment??? The dirt-dwellers say nothing?? The same dirt-dwellers accused The Bush of collusion when he was in office.... The dirt-dwellers are all excited about the hope and change not realising the same people that screwed them over 10 years ago are still in political office screwing them over today!! The dirt-dwellers roll in the dirt and ask for more because that is what they do. Will the dirt-dwellers band together and fight the good fight? Will the dirt-dwellers demand results? I think not. The dirt-dwellers are content with rolling in the dirt and asking for more.
These Wall Street characters are the most thick-headed and stubborn people in the world. They’re going to drive the American people to the point where they are SO ANGRY they’ll demand DRASTIC measures. The fat cats are going to be SORRY when they finally realize they’ve pushed the American people too far.
Of course the "survivors" are not aware that they remain in place thanks to the largesse of congress. These are the "masters of the universe," remember? They are all self-made men! What is particularly galling about Sorkin's book is that it never questions the orthodoxy underlying all the mistakes we've made thus far. Everyone continues to say that if we hadn't bailed out the banks, the economy would've "collapsed," and by extension, the world would've ended. Nonsense. Had we not bailed out the banks, we would've faced a very difficult year (just as we did anyway) and by now, the seeds of recovery would be sprouting. Instead, we've pissed away more than a trillion dollars to line the pockets of about 400 guys, and we've condemned ourselves to decades-long destruction of wealth and standards of living, and probably to a civil war, or perhaps even a world war, that could well destroy us all. All in the name of saving Goldman Sachs. Nice.
PEOPLE this is just another affirmation that they do insider deals at the expense of the investors. If you want to invest buy Gold, Silver Platinum, etc. and trade the market to beat the market. It's like staying at the table in Vegas as the house will always take your money in the end. The solution is replacing the members of Congress. No Senator should be in office more than 2 terms (12 years) and no Congressmen/women should be in office more than 3 terms (6 years) otherwise they do too much harm to us all. VOTE OUT the INCUMBENTS in 2010.
Microsoft declares a huge profit!!!! Microsoft has a huge development center in India. Microsoft also brings many, many guest workers to America to work at Microsoft. America Thanks Microsoft!
What are the banks making so much money at? Sure not loans to small business and community.....!
