Warren Buffett's 'Fundamental Weakness'

Posted Mar 04, 2009 02:56pm EST by Aaron Task in Investing, Newsmakers, Recession, Banking
Warren Buffett made headlines and raised eyebrows last October with his bold "Buy American, I Am" op-ed in The New York Times.

Since then, Buffett has come under criticism for:

  • Being early on his bullish call: Even after today's rally the Dow is down about 23% since his NYT piece on Oct. 16.
  • Not putting his money where hits mouth is: Buffett was a big buyer of stakes in GE, Goldman Sachs and Wrigley's in late 2008, but those were preferred shares with terms only available to him, not common shares like for the rest of us.

Jeff Matthews, founder of Ram Partners and author of Pilgrimage to Warren Buffett's Omaha, addresses those critiques in the accompanying video, the second of our two-part discussion about Buffett. (Click here for part one.)

The hedge fund manager also tackles the thorny issue of how much of a "Buffett premium" is built into Berkshire Hathaway, and whether that stock really is cheap after its own slide.

Investor's devotion to Buffett will be on display at Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting in early May. In anticipation of the event, Matthews is holding a contest for the best questions for Warren Buffett at his blog: Jeff Matthews Is Not Making This Up.
