Tuesday, November 24, 2009, 7:17PM ET - U.S. Markets Closed.
The U.S. has been on an "unsustainable cycle of buying and spending" that cuts across all strata of society, says TJ Marta, chief strategist at MartaontheMarkets.com.
The problem is that with everyone having a hand out -- from illegal immigrants to Wall Street to state and local governments -- the Federal government has now extended itself to the limits of its ability, and perhaps beyond.
Marta sees only two entities with the ability to bail out Uncle Sam - "savings glut countries" like China and the Federal Reserve, a private organization.
Both would-be saviors are getting cold feet, says the former RBC strategist:
Most Americans are already reining in their spending, which is a start. But Marta says the Obama administration and Congress must veer off their current deficit-laden course, or America's financial future will not be very pretty.
On that sobering note, I wish you all a safe and enjoyable July 4 celebration.
Twenty years of slow growth is what we will get with the current structural malaise in this country. On the other hand we can use this opportunity to depend less on consumer spending and more on investment in future growth industries to drive economic growth. Freezing health care costs, improving education and reducing dependence on oil price fluctuations are all factors that will contribute to long term growth. If we don't have the balls to do this, don't blame the President or politicians; look in the mirror to see where the problem is.
America appears to be hurtling to disaster at breakneck speed. My understanding is that the nation's current debt to GDP ratio is far worse than it was prior to the Great Depression. And America's capacity to service that debt is collapsing. No wonder the Chinese are trying to surrepticiously disengage. The way in which America has wasted other people's money is scandelous. I recall recently that America launched another spy satellite It cost a billion dollars but it never worked so they decided to shoot it down. A destroyer launched a rocket ( it cost $16 million ) and with amazing precision, intercepted the satellite and blew it to smithereems. Another breathtaking demonstation of American technology? No, an outrageous waste of other people's money, money that America will never be able to repay. America is in a parlous state but the population seem more interested in the latest mindless frippery to come out of Hollywood, "Transformers". I caught one of America's Sunday morning shows on TV and they were interviewing a 15 year old kid they'd flown over from Britain. Why? He'd tried to hand a rose to the star of Transformers, Megan Fox, on the red carpet and been pushed aside by her minders. That seems to be the only sort of thing a lot of Americans are interested in. Well they are in for a rude rude shock, but it won't be your fault, Aaron.
"Through the Reagan years" he says, regarding US debt being under control post WWII It was Rail Road Roney that cut the taxes, squeezed off Fed money for states, pushing more of the spending to the State house, started hacking aweay at services provided by the Fed govenment and started the reversal pèrocess on alll the hard fought victories of the post-deprecion era humanization of the USA. People so conveniently
If America went to a straight flat tax of 15% regardless of income, why would we need the IRS? 95% of the IRS could be eliminated and $Billions could be given to Congress to use for some useless project.
Spending needs to be cut and belts tightened. Until this correction takes place the economy will remain in "shambles" as Buffet said. The problem is more then financial; it's a cultural problem as well.
obama sure knows what he is doing and he is making America a socialist banana republic.... obama the typical 3rd world leader wannabe lifetime ruler.... welcome to obama's socialism... obama loves the 9.5 and climbing unemployment... people losing their health care and obama says 'I will save you with national health care"....
Perhaps a closer look at that chart would be useful. Particularly the "Reagan Years where it leveled off". Reagan was elected in 1980 if my memory serves, just before the beginning of the extended, if halting, run up that culminated in the 9 trillion national debt that 6 years of total Republican control fostered. Lets stop this Obama bashing that is purely political posturing, and get to the reality that America has undercut its own financial security by the slow but constant unwinding of the financial regulations put in place after the last major financial collapse - the "Great Depression".
we need a sea change of leadership in congress in 2010, American people unite and save this great nation from the fools that are running it into the ground. The warfare / welfare state must end, or we must raise taxes to unprecedented levels, or we go bankrupt. It is your choice. Continue to send the same idiots to Washington and you will get the the third choice. Number is the answer.
Don't fear... Within 1 year this country will be in a true world war... The winner shall take the spoils... I hope the USSA is on the winning side... LOL... All of this doom and gloom... The economy will recover and the U.S. will become strong again... Our government has to intervene one more time... After that, we will have 4 - 5 years of WAR... None of this grab assing that has been going on since Vietnam... But true and total destruction of some "troublesome" areas in the world... Complete genocide of a few races... Some countries will literally become baron waste lands... AND WE (THE HUMAN RACE) WILL CLAIM THAT THIS WAS DONE IN THE BEST INTEREST FOR THE ENTIRE PLANET!!! If I were you, I would stay out of the Middle East, most of Asia (correct that, all of Asia), and the Northern and Central parts of South America... This is going to happen...
Johnny Ike is obviously not American in addition to her obvious insanity. Turkey? For 4th of July? Try hot dogs or burgers. Turkey day is in November.
A few comments: First you say under Reagen there was "total" Republican control that fostered the debt runup. This is a misnomer. If you dig deeper, you will see where Reagen did have Democratic support for many of his "runups". You imply it was a Republican issue, when it was actually a bi-partisan issue. Then you go on to say let's stop the Obama bashing because it was "political posturing", eventhough you "postured" with the Republican implication. I am all for putting this behind, but it has to be sincere, not with biased provisos.
Yahoo! Finance User - Friday July 03, 2009 09:49AM EDT But one good idea would be to first treat illegals who show up in the emergency room,,,and then call immigration authorities. ******* An even better idea is to call immigration first, refuse health care, and tell the lot of them to BOUNCE! Why should we have to pay for any health care of any illegal? ************
I feel better after my daily dose of Johnny Ike. Thanks for your prayers for us all, JI, and Happy Independence Day!
Obimbo will go into history, if he allows history to be written and doesn't establish a dictatorship, as the worst President in U.S. history. He is absolutely clueless. He has lied to the people who supported him; i.e., no lobbyists will be hired - he hires lobbyists; no tax increases for those earning less than 200K/250K - the new energy bill will result in increased bills for everyone which is a tax; nationalized health care - even if you refuse it you have to pay. The list goes on and on. Congrats to the Obimbo supporters - you picked a real winner this time. btw - if you need to refinance your home, do not use Quicken Loans. They are a Predatory Lender. They will quote you one rate in the beginning then drag their heels and in the end your rate and fees will be higher and they will blame it on everyone but themselves.
"Unless we demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal sustainability in the longer term, we will have neither financial stability nor healthy economic growth," Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke recently told Congress. Where the hell has He been? Geithner must not have been talking to Bernanke. Oh I know, he's been keeping it a secret so Obamination and his gang of thieves can be re-elected again.
Right now we need a National Goal. This will unite the country. From the goal tasks are assigned (jobs) and the economy will expand. The expanding economy will pay the debt. The Kenndy race to the moon is an example. Our goal may be the new electrical power system. Happy Fourth of July
People don't seem to realize that politicians are selling the labor of future generations in order to pay for tanks and bank bonuses and crappy mandated healthcare. Bonds are sold on the backs of American taxpayers present and future. Marking an "X" on a piece of paper doesn't mean people agree to the fleecing of their children and grandchildren just because some politician needs a pet project to highlight on his website. What do YOU PERSONALLY get from the Federal gov't? Not much, I'm guessing, and not as much as you pay for.

Obama does not represent the American people. How can he; he is not American. He is not a "natural born citizen".
