From The Business Insider, July 10, 2009:
A person familiar with the situation tells the AP that GM has emerged from bankruptcy.
All it took was 40 days, 2 fewer than Chrysler. Bravo to Steve Rattner. Now let's see if the turnaround plan will work.
Here's longer look at the turnaround plan by the AP:
By TOM KRISHER and EMILY FREDRIX – DETROIT (AP) — After a night spent signing mounds of paperwork authorizing the transfer of cash, real estate, technology and other property, GM attorneys are expected to officially usher the new General Motors out of bankruptcy protection on Friday and onto a path toward a hopefully profitable future.
Once the world's largest and most powerful automaker, the troubled company is expected to emerge cleansed of massive debt and burdensome contracts that would have sunk it without federal loans. Spurred on by the Obama administration's support, the process took just 40 days, even slightly quicker than crosstown rival Chrysler Group LLC's 42-day timeframe.
On Thursday, a bankruptcy court order allowing GM to sell most of its assets to a new company went into effect. The new GM, 61 percent owned by the U.S. government, will face a brutally competitive global automotive market in the middle of the worst sales slump in a quarter-century.
At a 9 a.m. press conference Friday, CEO Fritz Henderson will announce that GM will cut another 4,000 white-collar jobs, including 450 top executives. The company still employs 88,000 people in the U.S. and 235,000 worldwide.

I hope the UAW and all its members puke choke and die
Ex-chief product designer Bob Lutz announced he was staying on as an adviser to GM instead of retiring. A while back, he announced that he was going to quit near the end of 2009 because he wanted to design cars that customers wanted, not cars that regulators wanted. Why not retire instead of working for a company 80% owned BY THE REGULATORS? It's called integrity, Bob; pretend like you have some.
So NOW US TAXPAYERS "OWN 60% OF GM, SO "OUR GOVERNMENT" CAN TELL GM HOW,TO BUILD CARS THAT NO-ONE WANTS TO OWN,......"PUDDLE JUMPERS"...CAN OBAMA FIT INSIDE "A PUDDLE JUMPER"??. FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT ARE 6' TALL,AND HIGHER,- GET OUT YOUR SHOEHORNS.......YOU'LL NEED IT TO GET INSIDE!!
4,000 jobs lost and 61% government ownership.......bravo to Steve Rattner???? Give me a f@cking break AP
Leaner company, nationalized, large stake for the unions, and I still wouldn't buy a GM car.
Mad? Know this, if you ever buy GM you are only helping the politicians screw you over.
This company should have been sold off. Why do we the taxpayers have to own it. Between the UAW and the executives of GM and the dealers screwing the customers and taxpayers, they should rot in hell!!
so we should keep buying toyota and honda ? where do you think that money goes to? Can you say not America or the American workers?!!
Obama is creating or saving how many jobs? Yeah, ask Gettlefinger if he saved his job?
Bob Lutz is staying on becuase he liked that multi-million dollar compensation package - would YOU stay at a job that was equal to winning the lottery every year? GM assembles a fine car - if you are buying their higher end products... there is no mathmatical reason a cadillac should cost more than a cavalier... but this is the 'game' they play. I, for one, will never buy a new GM product EVER again... way to much mark up for me.... sorry UAW, I am not here to pay you 100K+ a year to put screws in a car door while I struggle to feed my family on MUCH LESS.
Oh right, GM is only 60 % owned by the government. Doesn't make a difference. Is the ticker symbol still GM? I want to know so I can short that piece of crap. It's still GMGMQ.PK; That Q means they are still in bankruptcy.
I don't want to hear any 'poor me' talk from the automakers... they borrowed for DECADES into the future to pay themselves like rock stars - now they are just going to wipe the slate and start all over again. The vendors got screwed, we certainly got screwed... the execs got paid MILLIONS the union members, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS and the consumer... we got dumped on big time. Now we should just feel sorry for these dealers or union workers or execs? Not on my watch....
We, the tax payer, don't own anything... the GOVERNMENT has taken on this position (on our behalf)! Does this mean we all now qualify to go buy a GM product at COST? No, on the contrary we have seen the wealth of our children and grandchildren stolen from us in the night to support the multi-million dollar salaries of the exec, the 100K+ salaries of the workers, not to mention the unrealistic retirement packages of those past employees. My gosh, it's so easy to look the other way when you are wasting someone elses money... I will NEVER buy a new GM product... I will never be a part of fueling this machine of waste and greed.
Buying a honda or toyota IS buying an american car! Just becuase it's engineered in Japan doesn't mean it's built there. Of the top 10 cars build in this country... NONE OF THEM are amercian engineered brands! We do most of our building in Canada and Mexico! GM has destroyed their reputation to an entire generation... with no regret you stole, exploited and extorted the consumer and now the tax payer. You did it with a smile on your face with your, "They'll buy anything we put on the lot." attitude... I am done with you... and I am not alone. Sure, come out of bankrupcy, you will never be an industry leader again - not in my lifetime.
Enjoy your GM nostalgia, go down to the drive-in tonight, and drown your sorrows with Potsie and the Fonz. The American Century is over.
Good point, mmayzak. That is an obscene amount of money. For Lutz, for the execs, and for the unions. Not for the bondholders, though!
I WILL NOT BUY A CAR FROM OBAMAMOTORS!!!!! Not after the bondholders were screwed & our tax dollars used to pay the UAW for their undying support of our communist pres.!! To Hell with Michigan, in the 90s their Democrat run shcool board took God out of the state's education board mission statement, as if the word God was going to ruin the minds of our children. Because Michigan turned its back on God, God is turning its back on Michigan!
