Sting's Travel Buddy Bobby Sager Spreads Hope One Soccer Ball at a Time

Posted Dec 11, 2009 04:14pm EST by Peter Gorenstein in Newsmakers, Recession

I'm not a do gooder. I'm a doer who has figured out that hands-on, eyeball-to-eyeball making a difference is a way to live a very full life.

Whether he admits it or not, Bobby Sager does plenty of good in the places that need it to the most.  The philanthropist's latest project, The Power of the Invisible Sun combines his greatest passions, travel, photography and using one's "currency" (time, energy, unique talents) to help better humanity.

The book is a collection of photos Sager has taken of children in war-torn and desperate places from Afghanistan to Rwanda.

As you might have guessed the title is inspired by a song written by his travel buddy Sting who showcased the photos during the recent Police reunion tour.

For every book purchased, Sager’s foundation donates an indestructible soccer ball to a child in one of these war torn zones.  Sager was inspired to create the balls after seeing children playing with  soccer balls made of garbage in refuge camps in Africa.  He says the ball isn't simply a toy to keep them busy, it's a symbol of hope for a child's future.

To that end, Yahoo! has launched a year-end giving campaign called You In?, which aims to inspire a "ripple of kindness" around the world. Click here to get involved and find more information about the campaign.

Editor's note: The accompanying video was taped Dec. 4 at Minyanville's Holiday Festivus, an annual charity event held in New York City.
