We asked Peter a few questions as a get to know you.
What got you hooked on markets?
I got hooked on markets listening to my father talk about the New York Stock Exchange at the dinner table. I was fascinated by not only the subject matter but also by the way he talked about what he did for a living. He clearly loved it. He was always excited about it and always had a sense of respect for the institution and people he worked with.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in the market and how did it affect you?
The craziest thing I have ever seen was the crash of ’87. I had been a clerk on the trading floor of the NYSE for five years before becoming a member of the exchange in February of ’87. The crash occurred in October of that year. It was surreal. A true free fall. Complete pandemonium and limitless risk. I did not sleep for a week. The tape was delayed for hours if not days. Many brokers went out of business. Many left the business. All were permanently changed. That experience forever defined the word “risk” for me. I was ill prepared for it and completely blindsided by it. Risk is something that always sits on my frontal lobe ever since.
What do you do for fun?
I am boring I guess. I like to farm, garden, fish, read and write. Traveling is a love but have just finished raising four children I have not had the time for that just yet.
