Samsung kept its firm lead over Apple in the smartphone arena last quarter, though both companies saw their shares drop. A recent report showed that for the second quarter, Samsung's slice of the global smartphone market inched down to 30.4 percent from 32.2 percent a year ago. However, shipments jumped to 72.4 million from 50.3 million over the same period. Apple has lost another battle in its ongoing war with Samsung. During the second quarter, Samsung's global handset operating profits hit $5.2 billion while Apple's operating profit stood at $4.6 billion. Maps are where it's at.
