Smartphone shipments at BlackBerry grew 15% in the second quarter from the prior period. That’s the first sequential gain in a year and potentially proof that Chief Executive Officer John Chen’s turnaround plan is taking root. Research firm IDC said BlackBerry shipped 1.5 million units, compared with 1.3 million in the first quarter. The company’s share of the global smartphone market held firm at 0.5% even as the overall market grew. Shares of the company are up nearly 30% in the past 3 months as Chen attempts to change the company’s focus from hawking phones to consumers to selling software-based services to businesses and governments. TheStreet's Gregg Greenberg has details from New York.
