Company Technology News Byte: Chromecast May Just Be the Beginning of Google's Assault on the Living Room

A new report suggests that Chromecast may just be phase one of Google's plan to take over the living room. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company showcased a prototype of an Android-powered set-top box to select individuals as early as the Consumer Electronics Show this past January. Almost exactly a month ago, Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 11 as part of the Windows 8.1 preview and now, it is also launching a developer preview of IE11 for Windows 7. One area Microsoft has focused on with this release is speed, including a much-improved JavaScript engine and a stronger emphasis on GPU hardware acceleration. Apple hasn't reported its most recent iPhone sales numbers but newly released estimates from TrendForce indicate Samsung smartphone sales absolutely crushed Apple's iPhone in the second quarter this year. According to the firm, Apple sold 27 million iPhones in the second quarter while Samsung sold a staggering 71 million smartphones .
