Consumer Electronics News Byte: Microsoft Losing Money on Surface Tablets

Wochit 1:24 mins

Microsoft Corp's Surface tablets have yet to make any profit as sputtering sales have been eclipsed by advertising costs and an accounting charge, according to the software company's annual report. The two tablet models, introduced in October and February to challenge Apple Inc's popular iPad, have so far brought in revenue of $853 million. As the breakneck growth in the global smartphone market eases, the mostly Japanese companies that make the robots that build the phones are looking to automakers to take up the slack. After a one-week delay following a huge security breach that forced its developer portal offline for days, Apple has finally released iOS 7 beta 4 for the iPhone, iPad, iPad mini and iPod touch to developers, just as BGR exclusively reported would be the case. Apple's third iOS 7 beta was released three weeks ago and it was packed full of bug fixes and refinements. Apple will release iOS 7 to the public this fall alongside the new iPhone 5S, a new iPad and possibly a new entry-level iPhone dubbed "iPhone 5C" as well.
