Another debt ceiling debate is coming. Here's why you should care.
JamesL: The Bernie supporters who are objecting to Hillary are missing one huge point - the definition of politics. "Politics is the Art of the Possible". Bernie understands this. He put up a terrific fight. He showed us that the Democratic Party, excoriated by many strong progressives as irremediably part of the Wall Street/Washington-power megalith, can be reformed, can be taken over by true progressives, can become even more than what it was under Roosevelt. However - BIG However - Bernie lost the primary election. We who supported him were terribly disappointed, BUT we understand that he has accomplished two great things: He encouraged Hillary to move to the left on several issues, and he started a movement that - if we are smart enough to keep supporting and improving - will turn our society around. What that brings us to right now, in this Presidential election, is a different aspect altogether - the "Art of the Possible". Hillary is the ONLY candidate who can beat Trump. She is eons and light years better than Trump. Doing ANYTHING that increases Trump's chance of winning makes it that much less likely that the reforms Bernie supports, and the progress that has been made under Obama (in spite of foolish and obdurate opposition by the Teabagger Republicans) will be postponed or will fail altogether. The Nation and the people would suffer horribly under Trump. If Stein or Johnson understood this, and could put reality first, in front of their egos, they would also encourage their supporters to vote for Hillary. By continuing to the bitter end to ask their supporters to vote for a candidate with ZERO chance of defeating Trump, they are actually asking their supporters to vote FOR Trump - and that is Not a good idea at all. Anyone, like the ever so pure and righteous woman who declaimed that since Bernie is not the candidate, her vote would go to Stein, IS VOTING FOR TRUMP. She and every other Stein voter is missing the point completely, and she is slapping Bernie in the face. Bernie is supporting Hillary because that is the ONLY way we can move toward his goals, toward the progressive future that will bring help and progress to the Nation. All of us who supported Bernie in the Primary need to support him now. We need to vote for Hillary Clinton for President. That is the Art of the Possible. That is our best way toward a better future.
