Department of State Breaking News: US Posts in Muslim World Will Remain Closed

Citing "an abundance of caution," the State Department said U.S. diplomatic posts in 19 cities in the Muslim world will be closed at least through the end of the week. According to the Department, the continued closures are "merely an indication of our commitment to exercise caution and take appropriate steps to protect our employees, including local employees, and visitors to our facilities." The State Department said that it was extending the closing of 19 diplomatic posts in the Middle East and North Africa for the week because of continued fears of an attack by operatives of Al Qaeda and their associates. Dozens of diplomatic missions were closed over the weekend because of what American officials called ?credible? information about possible attacks. The United States issued a global travel alert to American citizens, warning of the potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, carried out by operatives of Al Qaeda and their associates.
