Disaster & Accident Breaking News: Asiana Pilot Had Little Experience Flying Boeing 777

Wochit 1:20 mins

Asiana Airlines says the pilot of the ill-fated Boeing 777 that crashed had little experience flying the aircraft and was landing one for the first time at San Francisco International when it slammed into the runway, killing two teenaged passengers and injuring more than half the 307 passengers and crew. Floods-in-central-Europe-last-month-may-cost-insurance companies $3.5-4.5 billion, only half of one previous estimate but more than was paid out for the last major washout in 2002. The forecast from Swiss Re compares to an earlier warning from a damage modeling agency that losses could top $8 billion. That, and its estimate of a $300 million hit for its own results, saw shares in Swiss Re and some other sector firms rise. Officials investigating a jetliner crash in San Francisco have determined that Asiana Airlines Flight 214 was traveling "significantly below" the target speed during its approach and that the crew tried to abort the landing just before it smashed onto the runway. What they don't yet know is whether the pilot's inexperience with this type of aircraft and at this airport played a role.
