Egypt Breaking News: Gavel-to-gavel Zimmerman Trial Coverage Hints at CNN's New Path

Wochit 1:24 mins

U.S. cable news network CNN came under withering criticism last week as it chose to stick with the George Zimmerman murder trial while Egypt's military ousted the elected president, an event teased in a small box during the network's trial coverage. Thousands of supporters of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood are demonstrating in a Cairo square, waving pictures of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. Officials said prosecutors will investigate allegations that Egypt's ousted president escaped from prison during the 2011 revolution with help from the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Chief prosecutor Hesham Barakat has received testimonies that will be the base for an investigation into the jailbreak by Morsi and more than 30 other Muslim Brotherhood leaders. The question of whether Hamas helped them escape amid the chaos surrounding the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak proved a political headache for Morsi during his one-year rule as Egypt's first freely elected president. Critics in the opposition and judiciary have suggested that proof of foreign intervention on Egyptian soil could lead to treason charges.
