Muslims began observing the dawn-to-dusk fast for the month of Ramadan-across-the Middle East, even-as-the-region-is shaken by the crisis in Egypt and the U.N. food agency-warned-that-Syria's civil war has left 7 million-people-in-need-of food aid. Egypt's military-backed interim president named a prominent economist, Hazem el-Beblawi, as prime minister and appointed pro-democracy leader Mohamed ElBaradei as a vice president, a presidential spokesman announced, ending days of deadlock over filling the top posts of a new government. An Egyptian security official says 650 people, mostly backers of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, have been detained for allegedly trying to storm a military facility, an incident the military claims sparked violence that left more than 50 pro-Morsi protesters dead.
