Egypt's Military Breaking News: Egypt's Defense Minister Defends Ousting President

by Wochit 1:05 mins

Saying he acted upon the will of the people after the "stumbling" of the former government, Egypt's military chief has defended the ouster of the Islamist president. In his first remarks since announcing the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi on July 3, Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said the armed forces "acted at the urging of the people." U.S. cable news network CNN came under withering criticism last week as it chose to stick with the George Zimmerman murder trial while Egypt's military ousted the elected president, an event teased in a small box during the network's trial coverage. Military attack helicopters rattle over the impoverished desert towns of northern Sinai and the sound of gunfire erupts nightly, raising fears among residents of a looming confrontation between Egypt's military and Islamic militants who have intensified attacks since the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi.
