U.S. Stocks are mixed at the open on Thursday. Strong economic data and earnings results are setting the S&P 500 up to extend gains following Wednesday's record close. The number of Americans applying for jobless benefits fell to 284,000 in the latest week. That's the lowest level in more than 8 years. The Labor Department also reported Continuing Claims dropped to its lowest level since June 2007. News from Wal-Mart (WMT) before the bell has its shares falling. The discount retailer announced its U.S. CEO Bill Simon would leave the company. Earnings news is also moving stocks like Facebook (FB) and Ford (F) higher. General Motors (GM) is losing more ground after reporting disappointing results. TheStreet's Susannah Lee reports.
