Germany Breaking News: Report: U.S. Taps Half-billion German Phone, Internet Links in Month

by Wochit 0:57 mins

The United States taps half a billion phone calls, emails and text messages in Germany in a typical month and has classed its biggest European ally as a target similar to China, according to secret U.S. documents quoted by a German newsmagazine. A top German official accused the United States of using "Cold War" methods against its allies, after a German magazine cited secret intelligence documents to claim that U.S. spies bugged European Union offices. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble slammed Irish bankers caught on tape joking about a bailout, calling them "aloof super humans" worthy of contempt. Schaeuble's remarks quoted by an edition of Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung to be published echoed comments by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
