Microsoft Windows News Byte: Now All Windows Phones Can Have Nokia's Mapping and Transit Apps

Hoping to snag a few more paying customers -- and offer an alternative to Google Maps --, Nokia is bringing its suite of mapping, turn-by-turn direction, and transit apps to all Windows Phone 8 smartphones. The app, known as Here will arrive in the Windows Phone Store by the end of the week. Microsoft said hackers have attacked some computers by exploiting a bug in Windows first disclosed two months ago by a Google researcher, who came under fire at the time for publicizing the flaw without going to the software company first. Microsoft said that its forthcoming update to Windows 8 will be ready for PC makers by late August in order to ensure that holiday PCs will have the new software. Windows 8.1 is designed to address some key critiques of Windows 8, including adding back a start screen, improving the mail app and making the shift from modern apps and classic Windows software less jarring.
