Middle East Breaking News: Many Muslims Start Ramadan Fast Amid Turmoil

Wochit 1:10 mins

Muslims began observing the dawn-to-dusk fast for the month of Ramadan-across-the Middle East, even-as-the-region-is shaken by the crisis in Egypt and the U.N. food agency-warned-that-Syria's civil war has left 7 million-people-in-need-of food aid. A powerful car bomb exploded in a Hezbollah stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut, wounding at least 53 people in the most troubling sign yet that Syria's civil war is beginning to consume its smaller neighbor. Egypt's interim leadership laid out a fast-track timetable to elect a new president and parliament by early next year, in a move that is almost certain to deepen the anger of ousted President Mohammed Morsi's supporters, but could ease Western concerns about the future of democracy in the key Arab nation. Under the plan put forward by the interim president, two panels would be appointed to make amendments to the Islamist-backed constitution passed under Morsi's government.
