Politics Breaking News: Angelina Jolie, UNHCR Envoy, Urges World To End Rape In War

by Wochit 1:11 mins

Actress Angelina Jolie made her debut before the U.N.'s most powerful body as a special envoy for refugees Monday and urged the world's nations to make the fight against rape in war a top priority. She told the Security Council that "hundreds of thousands ? if not millions ? of women, children and men have been raped in conflicts in our lifetimes." Majority Leader Harry Reid said the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives needs to solve its farm bill impasse by enacting the Senate's bipartisan bill, warning that the Democrat-run Senate will not extend current law again. The National Security Council said that the U.S. government expects Russia to look at all the options available for expelling NSA leaker Edward Snowden. Ecuador's foreign minister said that Snowden told the country's officials that he fears a life of inhumane treatment -- even death -- if he's returned the United States to answer espionage charges, and pleaded for asylum from U.S. officials he says want to persecute him.
