Currently, in 33 states you can be fired, denied a promotion or be openly harassed at your job just for being gay. But not for long. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions just passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act a bill that will ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The Texas House of Representatives has approved a measure that would place broad new restrictions on abortions in the state. The legislation would ban abortions past 20 weeks of gestation and require abortion clinics to become ambulatory surgical centers. The bill would also tighten usage guidelines for the drug RU486 and require doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic at which they're providing abortion services. A state Senate committee still has to vote on whether to send its version of the bill to the full Senate. South Africa's President Jacob Zuma said Nelson Mandela is responding to treatment and the 94-year-old's condition remains critical but stable after more than a month in the hospital.
