Tech Companies News Byte: Microsoft Losing Money on Surface Tablets

Microsoft Corp's Surface tablets have yet to make any profit as sputtering sales have been eclipsed by advertising costs and an accounting charge, according to the software company's annual report. The two tablet models, introduced in October and February to challenge Apple Inc's popular iPad, have so far brought in revenue of $853 million. Dozens of major U.S. companies, including Morgan Stanley, Google, Wal-Mart and Dell, on Tuesday urged lawmakers to pass bills that they said would protect new products against "extortive demands" on patents. Former Apple store employees in New York and Los Angeles have filed a class-action lawsuit charging that they were forced to wait in line for 30 minutes a shift for their bags to be searched for stolen goods. They say that they are not paid for the time standing in line, which amounts to $1,500 a year. The suit, which was filed in the Federal District Court in the Northern District of California, was reported earlier by GigaOm.
