Samsung kept its firm lead over Apple in the smartphone arena last quarter, though both companies saw their shares drop. A recent report showed that for the second quarter, Samsung's slice of the global smartphone market inched down to 30.4 percent from 32.2 percent a year ago. However, shipments jumped to 72.4 million from 50.3 million over the same period. Apple has lost another battle in its ongoing war with Samsung. Research firm Strategy Analytics revealed that for the first time in four years, Apple is no longer the most profitable smartphone maker in the world. During the second quarter, Samsung's global handset operating profits hit $5.2 billion while Apple's operating profit stood at $4.6 billion. A new report suggests that Chromecast may just be phase one of Google's plan to take over the living room. According to The Wall Street Journal, the company showcased a prototype of an Android-powered set-top box to select individuals as early as the Consumer Electronics Show this past January.
