President Barack Obama's limited attempt to end more than two years of bloodshed in Syria and his insistence on U.S. assistance to a strife-riven Egypt have exposed deep divisions in Congress, with pockets of grudging support countered by fierce opposition toward greater American military and financial involvement among Democrats and Republicans alike. Republican Senator John McCain said he would not delay Army General Martin Dempsey's nomination to a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff after Dempsey spelled out what he saw as possible U.S. military options for Syria. At least six people were killed near a sit-in held by supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi, the latest sign that Egypt?s political impasse is devolving into street battles.
