Labor Day weekend is just getting started, and travelers are flocking to vacation destinations to soak up just a little more of that summer sun.
Las Vegas, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Cancun, Mexico, were the top destinations booked by Orbitz travel site customers for Labor Day weekend, according to the company.
Ticket prices were up slightly across the board. The average roundtrip airfares for Las Vegas were up 4 percent to $323, for New York up 2 percent to $279, Chicago up 6 percent to $300, Cancun up 3 percent to $484 and San Francisco up 2 percent to $316, according to Orbitz travel data.
Atlanta was also among the Top 10 destinations, and this year, prices were up about 16 percent from a year ago, rising to $290 for the average ticket from $251, according to Orbitz data.
"Demand drives prices and you've got some big things going on over Labor Day weekend in Atlanta," said Orbitz spokeswoman Marita Hudson Thomas. The University of Alabama and Virginia Tech will open the college football season in Atlanta this weekend and a Nascar event is scheduled to the Atlanta Motor Speedway, she noted.
"For Alabama, Virginia Tech, Nascar, [they're] all big fans that travel," Thomas said.
Last-minute Labor Day travelers to any destination can get 15 percent off hotel rates by using the promo code "GETAWAY15," Thomas added.
