Beware holiday travelers who haven't booked plane tickets for the long Thanksgiving weekend: flights will cost more this year than last, according to recent data.

Airfares for the top 10 most popular destinations for Thanksgiving travel are up 9 percent this year vs. last year, according to travel booking site Orbitz.com.

But travelers can still score deals in time for turkey day, according to Jeanenne Tornatore, Orbitz senior editor.

Traveling on specific days, like Thanksgiving Day, can mean savings, according to the site's data.

This Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, is the cheapest day for Thanksgiving air travel. Roundtrip tickets leaving that day will cost about $406 on average compared with $499 for a departure just a day earlier, according to Orbitz data.

Flyers who earn airline points may face blackout dates during the holidays, but a few more generous rewards plans may be willing to let customers redeem points for holiday travel, Tornatore told "Big Data Download."
