Literally, nothing can dampen a round of golf more than rain, and this year there’s been a lot of it. A 2008 study by Michigan State University found that every one inch or more of rain means 92 fewer rounds sold at individual golf courses.
The study also found that when temperatures drop by one degree from the day prior during peak season, golf courses lose nine rounds played. Every degree higher than the prior day means 6 more rounds are played.
Last spring, there was hardly any rain, while this year in New York alone there were four additional days with one inch of rain compared with last year, according to Paul Walsh of The Weather Channel.
Walsh told “Big Data Download” that golf-related companies are probably facing headwinds. Shares of golf club maker Calloway, as well as Nike and Dick’s Sporting Goods, are all trending lower over the past thirty days.
A study by the Journal of Leisure attempted to forecast the effect of climate change on golf. As temperatures warm in the northern U.S. and Canada, golfers can expect a 7-week increase in the amount of time they can play golf, the study said.
