Stocks closed the day mixed after trading in a narrow range. The Dow Industrials (^DJI) fell, while the Nasdaq (^IXIC)  and the S&P 500 (^GSPC) finished slightly higher for the day.

Shares of Apple (AAPL) rose after billionaire investor Carl Icahn said he bought more Apple stock, increasing his investment in the company to more than $3 billion worth of shares.

Cloud software maker VMware (VMW) shares rose over 1% after the company said it would buy privately-held mobile security firm AirWatch for about $1.54 billion. The firm also announced its fourth-quarter revenue estimates at the high end of its previous outlook.

Investors dumped shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) after the company warned it expects revenue to fall 16% in the first quarter. IBM (IBM) also disappointed with revenue that fell short of estimates.

Other big movers on the day included Coach (COH), whose shares were sharply lower after the company reported a 6% decline in revenue and earnings that came in $0.05 below expectations at $1.06 a share.

After the bell, Netflix (NFLX) and eBay (EBAY) are expected to report fourth quarter results.
