Gas rationing WWII

On this date -- May 15, 1942 -- 17 states on the East Coast instituted gasoline rationing to support the war effort. By the end of the year, under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, all 50 states had joined the effort, which mandated gas rationing booklets like this one photographed decades later by David C. Foster.

Also on this date in 1911, the Supreme Court ruled that Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey was in fact a monopoly in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, and ordered its breakup.
