Nearly half a century after his death, Charles de Gaulle is everywhere in the country of which he had “a certain idea”. From his twenties, he had no doubt about his place in history, referring to himself in the third person and carefully crafting his identification with the nation, even if the object of his affections was often more imagined than real.
