Exclusive: Smithsonian board picks location for new headquarters

The Smithsonian Institution has picked a 10-story building by the L'Enfant Plaza Metro in Southwest D.C. for its new headquarters, nearly a year after kicking off its search. The institution's Board of Regents voted Monday to approve plans to acquire 600 Maryland Ave. SW, a 631,629-square-foot building not quite a half mile from its current headquarters in the Smithsonian Castle, Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas said. The deal is subject to congressional approval, and St. Thomas declined to disclose terms of the acquisition pending that approval.
