Large carmakers including Volkswagen, FCA could face 2021 EU emissions fines: study

Volkswagen and FiatChrysler could face penalties of up to 1.83 billion euros ($2.08 billion) and 746 million euros respectively, if they fail to meet the European Union's emissions targets set for 2021, according to AlixPartners. The study by the consulting firm, which was published on Wednesday, shows how hard it is for carmakers to meet European rules for cutting average fleet emissions for passenger cars to 95 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer by 2021. AlixPartners forecast the size of potential penalties based on the vehicle emissions levels reported by carmakers at the end of 2017.

Chinese buyers are pulling out of New York real estate in droves

China's capital controls are making their mark on New York's luxury real estate market. In an effort to shore up its currency, the world's second biggest economy has been cracking down on money leaving the country, and there are significant concerns (paywall) about its real estate developers' levels of US dollar debt. Having briefly been the main movers and shakers in New York real estate, Chinese developers have fallen behind the Canadians, the Germans and the Dutch.

How Did Slack’s Public Offering Go?

Slack (NYSE: WORK) used a direct listing to go public. It does, however, benefit the brand in some ways, because the transparency required of a public company should make it easier for larger enterprises to commit to using the workplace productivity app. Shares opened strongly, pushing them to a valuation that may not be justified by the company's revenue.

On Watch in the Arabian Gulf: What the U.S. Navy Faces Against Iran

When oil tankers were bombed in the Persian Gulf two weeks ago, my thoughts turned to the summer of 1987 when I sailed through the narrow Strait of Hormuz for the first time as the Operations Officer in a brand-new Navy Cruiser, the U.S.S. Valley Forge. Like today, tensions were elevated with Iran as a result of their attacks on merchant shipping, carried out largely through dumping mines in international waters – part of the so-called “Tanker War.” Several oil tankers were hit, passage through the Strait was problematic, and the international community sought to keep the Strait open to allow some 30% of the world's oil that moves through it. By spring 1988, the U.S. had attacked the Iranian Navy, sinking several warships and destroying naval bases in Operation Praying Mantis.

Cannabis stocks drift lower as broader markets falter; Hexo hit by downgrade

The spike in activity comes amid a broad push for legislation that would protect banks and credit unions from federal enforcement action that could be brought because cannabis is still illegal at the federal level. Two bipartisan bills are currently being promoted; the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, and the broader Strengthening the Tenth Amendment Through Entrusting States (STATES) Act. Last week, lawmakers approved a spending bill that included a rider preventing the Justice Department from using federal funds to interfere with the cannabis business in states that have legalized.

One of last year's hottest social media stocks is coming under fire in 2019. Shares of The Meet Group (NASDAQ: MEET) tumbled 7% on Monday, after a New York Post story came out over the weekend suggesting that Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) was about to boot it from its App Store on concerns of prostitution and other forms of adult entertainment taking place on MeetMe's live-streaming platform. The Meet Group defended its fast-growing video offering when the accusations were raised by a bearish blogger earlier this month, a move that sent the once-red-hot shares to a fresh 52-week low.

The 2 Biggest Casualties From the Celgene-Bristol-Myers Merger (So Far)

Celgene (NASDAQ: CELG) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) were scheduled to say their official "I dos" in the coming months, but this blended family isn't starting off in Brady Bunch fashion. Last week, Celgene cut ties with BeiGene (NASDAQ: BGNE), giving up its rights to tislelizumab, BeiGene's anti-PD-1 antibody since Bristol-Myers sells a competing PD-1 antibody, Opdivo. Reportedly, the contract said Celgene can't hold two PD-1 class drugs, so Bristol-Myers likely knew it wasn't going to be able to keep rights to tislelizumab when it made the acquisition offer.
