Boeing's Big Day: WTO Clears Way For Massive Penalties In Long-Running Aircraft Subsidies Case

Loren Thompson

After 14 years of arguments and appeals, the United States has emerged victorious from its case before the World Trade Organization challenging European aircraft subsidies. Europe's last line of defense fell Tuesday, with the WTO ruling that the U.S. Trade Representative may now proceed to impose tariffs on European exports matching the damage caused by $22 billion in illegal subsidies. The decision of the appellate panel will shortly be sent to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body for adoption, which is a formality.
