[$$] S Korea court orders Mitsubishi Heavy to pay WW2 reparations

Bryan Harris

South Korea’s supreme court on Thursday ordered a top Japanese company to pay reparations to the Korean victims of forced labour during the second world war, in a decision likely to exacerbate a diplomatic standoff between the two nations. The ruling follows a similar judgement by the top court in Seoul last month that sparked a sharp backlash from Tokyo and triggered a marked cooling of ties. Relations between the two US allies were also hit last week when Seoul announced it would dismantle a central pillar of a landmark bilateral deal with Tokyo, which had intended to draw a line under Japan’s controversial use of wartime sex slaves.
