The Dow Jones Industrial Average, or Dow 30, is a price-weighted average of 30 stocks vs. most other Indexes that use market caps. For every dollar a Dow 30 stock moves it impacts the Index by 6.885 points. This means the higher priced shares can have a greater influence on it, which showed up on Friday when a small group of high priced stocks contributed a significant percentage of the Dow’s decline.
