Pay for essential workers is rising, but many say it’s still not enough. Waiters and waitresses experienced the highest percentage increase in median annual pay — up 25% to over $20,000 in 2022 from 2019. People in 20 of 30 essential worker positions included in the Payscale report said they believed their pay was fair, while 16 roles experienced a decrease in the share of workers who said their pay was fair between 2019 and 2021.
