Amateur-Friendly Golden Walleye Tournament Features $100K Tag
On June 17, 2017, the Golden Walleye Fishing Tournament will open on Lake Erie, OH. The 23-day event will feature a $100,000 Grand-Prize tagged walleye for registered anglers to pursue, as well as over $25,000 in biggest catch prizes ($10,000 to first place).

A total of 150 tagged walleye will be released for the tournament using a tagging strategy approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. All of these tagged walleye will be worth a minimum of $1,000 to any registered angler who catches and presents the fish, and one Grand-Prize fish will be worth $100,000. These fish will be spread evenly across two release zones, one centered in Cleveland and spanning 50 coastal miles and another that encompasses Port Clinton, Catawba, Marblehead, Kelleys Island, and Put-in-Bay.
Golden Walleye Registration packages are available in a number of different affordable options that cater to all levels of anglers:
The standard 23-Day Pass allows participants to chase all prizes throughout the Tournament for just $35.
The $60 MVP package includes a significant boost in the prizes and an official tournament t-shirt.
The $15 Daily Pass is available for family members, visiting anglers, or those who want to take advantage of the many excellent walleye charter services offered along Lake Erie's coast.
Youth registration, a major initiative of the event, is free.
The event will be making contributions to the Lake Erie Protection Fund, which allows the Ohio Lake Erie Commission to provide research grants to projects that sustain the Lake Erie ecosystem. "The current and future work of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission and our state agencies is focused on creating and restoring in-water wetlands, improving fish habitat and water quality and preventing the spread of invasive species such as Asian carp into Lake Erie," said Ohio Lake Erie Commission Executive Director Karl Gebhardt. "Through people entering this contest and doing what they love – going fishing on Lake Erie – they will be helping protect and restore this wonderful natural resource," he continued.
"Ohio boasts a number of world class attractions, and the Lake is one of the most important," said Frohnapple. "The Golden Walleye Fishing Tournament is our attempt to ensure that this resource is properly highlighted and is not missed by the next generation of Ohio outdoorsman, while focusing on the protection of the Lake Erie fishery in the process."
The 2017 Golden Walleye Fishing Tournament's growing list of sponsors includes B & B Windows and Remodeling, Lake Erie Apparel, and three of Lake Erie's top charter boat services: Reel Thrill Charters, Top Flight Sport Fishing, and Eye-Catcher Charters.
"Lake Erie is the jewel of the Great Lakes and is touted as the "Walleye Capital of the World". The Golden Walleye Tournament spotlights our world class fishery and offers all types of anglers different opportunities to participate," said captain Tony Sambunjak of Reel Thrill Charters.
Tournament Directors Frohnapple and Roman are college students and lifelong friends born and raised in Cleveland, OH. They received their initial funding from a collegiate business pitch competition, and hope that the momentum they create with the first annual tournament will allow them to continue growing the event year by year.
