2018 Vehicle Dependability Study: Most Dependable Coupes and Convertibles

jeff.youngs

Every year, J.D. Power surveys the original owners of 3-year-old vehicles in order to understand what has gone right and gone wrong during this period of ownership. The data is collected, analyzed, and published in the annual J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study.

From this data, J.D. Power creates Power Circle Ratings. These ratings are designed to provide car shoppers with an easily referenced visual representation of how a particular car, truck, SUV, or minivan compares to other vehicles in the segment in terms of dependability. Consumers can use the ratings to compare vehicles and to make a more informed decision about their next vehicle purchase.

This Most Dependable Coupes and Convertibles guide includes those 2015 model-year vehicles that receive a Power Circle Rating of 4 or 5 out of a possible 5 for vehicle dependability after three years of ownership.

2015 Audi A5

Available as a coupe or a convertible, and with a turbocharged 4-cylinder (A5), supercharged 6-cylinder (S5), or V8 engine (RS 5), the 4-seat Audi A5 lineup offers something for everyone. In 2015, the front-drive version of the A5 was discontinued, making Quattro all-wheel drive a standard feature. The A5 versions also received numerous new sport-design enhancements. A new Technology Package debuted for all three variants, along with new wheel choices.

2015 BMW 2 Series

Serving as an entry-point to BMW ownership in much the same way that the legendary 2002 did back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the 2 Series is a small, 4-passenger, rear-drive sports coupe offered with a turbocharged 4-cylinder or turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and with a manual or automatic transmission. In 2015, a convertible joined the lineup, and all-wheel drive became available. A new Track Handling Package made the 228i 4-cylinder models more fun to drive.

2015 BMW 4 Series

One size larger than the 2 Series, and based on the 3 Series platform, the BMW 4 Series came in coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe (5-door hatchback) body styles. Buyers chose between a turbocharged 4-cylinder and turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, a manual and an automatic transmission, and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. In 2015, BMW expanded availability of several features to make the 4 Series more appealing, and debuted the new performance tuned M4 variant.

2015 Chevrolet Camaro

Chevrolet’s popular “pony car” continued for 2015 without major changes, in advance of a complete redesign for 2016. As such, buyers could choose a coupe or convertible body style, a V6 or one of several V8 engines, and a manual or automatic transmission, depending on the chosen trim. The LS was the standard model, while LT trim served as an upgrade. The SS installed a V8 engine and go-faster hardware, while the ZL1 and Z28 served as the high performance versions of the Camaro.

2015 Dodge Challenger

A large coupe based on the same platform as the Dodge Charger, the Challenger is a rear-drive muscle car with genuine space for five adults, combined with a trunk big enough to accommodate a road trip. It is offered with a V6 or a choice between two V8 engines, and with a manual or automatic transmission. In 2015, Dodge updated the styling inside and out, while simultaneously improving the car’s infotainment and safety systems. A new Scat Pack option provided more affordable access to a 6.4-liter “Hemi” V8.

2015 Lexus IS

When Lexus redesigned the IS Sedan for the 2014 model year, it continued to build the IS Convertible as a version of the previous-generation car. That strategy continued for the 2015 model, and the IS Convertible was offered in IS 250 and IS 350 format. The IS 250 came with a 2.5-liter V6, while the IS 350 had a more powerful 3.5-liter V6. Both engines powered the power retractable hardtop convertible’s rear wheels. For 2015, Lexus expanded the number of App Suite music offerings.
