One of the best ways to learn about a culture is through food. And while you might not be able to hop on a plane to Japan, you can get authentic snacks from the country delivered right to your door.

What is Bokksu?

Bokksu is a premium subscription service that works with local Japanese businesses to deliver a new box of snacks each month. Snacks are both savory and sweet, and include Kit Kats with unique flavors, mochi, tea, rice crackers and more. You can purchase a box for one month, three months or 12 months, or you can purchase snacks individually.

Founder Danny Taing launched Bokksu after living and working in Japan for many years. When he returned to the U.S., he wanted a way to get all of his favorite authentic Japanese snacks.

“We are totally in love with authentic Japanese snacks, which is why we handpick snacks that people in Japan actually eat and curate them into beautiful themed boxes every month,” the brand’s website reads. “We are also the only Japanese subscription box that includes a Tea Pairing specifically selected to complement that month’s delicacies as well as a Culture Guide magazine that describes the story and flavors of each item in the box.”

There are a few ways to get your snacks delivered

Bokksu has two types of boxes: classic and tasting. The Classic Bokksu includes an assortment of 20-25 Japanese snacks, along with a tea pairing, curated around a cultural theme (past themes have included mochi or New Year’s). As mentioned, it also comes with a Culture Guide that explains how to best enjoy the snacks, along with their own stories.

The Tasting Bokksu is the smaller version and includes 10-14 Japanese snacks and a tea pairing curated to the same theme as the Classic. While you’re not guaranteed to get every snack that’s in the Classic, you’ll get most of them, according to the product description.

As a new customer, your first Bokksu delivery will be the “Seasons of Japan” box, which includes Japanese snacks across all four seasons. After your first purchase, you’ll enjoy the month’s designated cultural theme.

Get your own Bokksu delivered ASAP

The Classic Bokksu starts at $36.99 per box, while the Tasting Bokksu starts at $24.99 per box. Prices go up depending on whether or not you purchase one box or a full year’s subscription, but either way, boxes ship free and within two days of ordering.
