2020 Study: Majority Of Young Adults In America Live With Their Parents

A recent coronavirus research report by Pew revealed the highest number of American young adults are living with their parents now since the Great Depression.

Before COVID-19 lockdowns occurred in the United States, 46% of young adults reported they were living with parents as of January 2020.

Each month following January 2020 has seen an increase of greater than or equal to 1% of young adults reporting they’ve made the move back home to live with a parent.

"Living at home" is defined as living in the same household with one or more parents, according to Pew. A young adult is defined as an individual between the ages of 18 and 29.

The mark was broken over the summer: the most recent figures were reported in July 2020 and showed 52% of young adults telling Pew they live at home.

Before 2020, the highest measured percentage of young adults living with parents occurred at the end of the Great Depression (48%), Pew said.
