2seventy bio, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSVT) Analysts Just Slashed This Year's Revenue Estimates By 12%

In this article:

One thing we could say about the analysts on 2seventy bio, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSVT) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Revenue estimates were cut sharply as analysts signalled a weaker outlook - perhaps a sign that investors should temper their expectations as well.

Following the latest downgrade, the current consensus, from the six analysts covering 2seventy bio, is for revenues of US$51m in 2022, which would reflect an uneasy 11% reduction in 2seventy bio's sales over the past 12 months. Per-share losses are expected to see a sharp uptick, reaching US$8.71. Yet prior to the latest estimates, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$58m and losses of US$8.47 per share in 2022. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 21% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2022. That is a notable change from historical growth of 20% over the last year. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 15% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - 2seventy bio is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses this year, suggesting all may not be well at 2seventy bio. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that 2seventy bio's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. Overall, given the drastic downgrade to this year's forecasts, we'd be feeling a little more wary of 2seventy bio going forwards.

Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for 2seventy bio going out to 2024, and you can see them free on our platform here.
