3 Men Killed And 1 Injured In Horrific Hit-And-Run Incident Outside Gay Bar In Chicago

·3 min read

On Sunday, an atrocious hit-and-run crash killed three people and injured another on Chicago‘s south side outside one of the country’s oldest Black-owned gay bars, The Jeffrey Pub.

According to ABC, Devonta Vivetter, 27, and Donald Huey, 25, have been identified as two of the three victims killed.

“I’ve been crying all day. It’s just – I can’t believe it,” Vivetter’s cousin, Anita, told ABC. “Someone jumped in the car and ran them over. Saw that they were fighting, jumped in the car, and ran them over.”

Chicago police believe the incident started inside the Jeffery Pub, where an “ongoing altercation” carried outside when someone jumped into a car around 5 a.m., running over the group in the street.

Explicit clips of the hit-and-run incident show several bar-goers grappling in the street when a silver car races down the dark road and hits four of them on impact. The disturbing video shows three of the victim’s bodies flying into the air as bystanders screamed and stood back.

“It’s no way you couldn’t have seen the folks in the middle of the street. And for you to keep going like that, this is ridiculous,” one person who didn’t want to be identified told ABC.

“You could just hear down the street: boom, boom, other people were getting hit. I was just focused on who I was in front of, the victim. The victim that was in front of me. I was just focused on him,” another witness said.

The Jeffery Pub released a statement urging anyone with information as to who the driver is to come forward.

“We always encourage everyone to leave and go to your vehicles right away to make it home safe,” the bar said. “And tonight, this happened.”

Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan explained he wants to solve this case immediately but needs help locating the suspect.

“You can’t charge a car with a crime, obviously. We need to know who the driver was,” Deenihan added. “There were a lot of people out there, a lot of people that were inside the bar prior to this occurring, and we definitely believe that there’s individuals who actually want to give us that information to name a suspect.”

Deenihan said the homicide isn’t currently being investigated as a hate crime but stated, “It appears to be intentional.”

“We don’t have any evidence to support that somebody was trying to harm these individuals based because of their race, religion, etc.,” Deenihan said. “That can change once we get more witnesses and a suspect in.”

The vehicle fled the scene, police said.

“Not only is there no regard for the law, but there’s no regard for life,” said community member Dr. Mark Stearnes.
